Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate recipe

Hot chocolate fans, get ready! My Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate recipe is one you won’t want to miss.

I’ve always loved hot chocolate; it’s been my favorite special drink since I was a kid and still is today.

As an adult, I decided my beloved hot chocolate needed an upgrade, a healthier version, as priorities change with age.

Just as I was pondering on that thought, my younger sister showed up for a visit and as usual, her friends were right behind her. I’ve always been the cool sister known for making amazing meals, snacks, and drinks.

So here I was trying to figure out what to feed these young teenagers in my house, one that doesnโ€™t involve ordering pizza.

Then I remembered the can of pumpkin puree left in my pantry and some packs of cocoa. I thought, “Why not make something sweet and healthy for everyone?”

That’s how twenty minutes later, I had four teenagers sitting at my couch, phones actually put away, having real conversations while sipping the most incredible orange tinted hot chocolate any of us had ever tasted. Amazing right?

But the best part? My usual reserved sister actually hugged me and whispered, “Thanks for being awesome, sis.” A beautiful moment I’ll always remember.

Since then, my house has become the unofficial after school hangout spot. They just keep showing up.

Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate drink is a wonderful blend of cocoa, warming spices, brown sugar and pumpkin puree. It’s creamy, delicious, quick and easy to make just like the White Chocolate pumpkin drink.ย

The post will teach you all you need to know about this amazing and healthy drink. Who’s with me?

A Warm History

Pumpkin-spice-chocolate

Hot chocolateย first appeared around BC when the Mayans and Aztecs made a drink called “xocolatl.” They mixed cacao beans, water, and spices but it was bitter, sometimes spicy, and they thought it was a sacred drink and not everyone was allowed to drink it.

The recipe changed in the s when Spanish explorers brought cacao to Europe. They started adding sugar and milk, making it taste much closer to the modern hot chocolate we love.

By the s, special hot chocolate shops became the trendy social spots in cities like London and Paris.

The modern “pumpkin spice” craze really took off in the early s with the introduction of the Pumpkin Spice Latte. This drink uses flavored syrup, which contains the spices and sweetener, but typically no actual pumpkin puree.

Then the flavor became globally popular, people naturally started experimenting with every other warm drink, including hot chocolate. Commercial hot chocolate products began offering a “pumpkin spice” flavor, still relying on syrups or artificial flavorings.

The move to add actual pumpkin puree to hot chocolate was primarily a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) trend driven by home cooks and food bloggers.

Home cooks wanted to make a drink that tasted better, was less artificial, and contained the real ingredient; Pumpkin.

How healthy is it?

Pro Tips for the Best Pumpkin Spice Hot Chocolate

Quality Matters: The quality of the cocoa will make or break this drink. Use real cocoa powder, not hot chocolate mix. Dutch-processed cocoa gives the richest flavor but natural cocoa works great too.

Don’t Use Pumpkin Pie Filling: Always use 100% pure pumpkin puree. Pumpkin pie filling has added sugars and spices that you want to control yourself. Use canned pumpkin puree instead.

Heat It Gently: Heat the milk and pumpkin puree gently on the stove. Don’t let it boil, as this can change the flavor and texture of the drink.

Storage Solutions

  • This hot chocolate is definitely best served fresh and hot, but sometimes you might need to save some for later.
  • Cool completely and store in the fridge for up to 3 days. The mixture will thicken as it cools, which is totally normal.
  • Reheat gently on the stove over low heat, whisking frequently. Add a splash of milk if it’s too thick. Microwave works too, just heat in 30 second intervals, stirring between.
