Pumpkin Milkshake Ice cream drink recipe

Ready to try something new? Here is my Pumpkin Milkshake Ice cream drink recipe.

For my kids, the sound of the ice cream truck is always a signal for giggles and smiles

Even if they are reading, they’ll instantly snap out of “serious student mode,” jump up with a shout of joy, and race to the door to watch the truck as it goes by.

Children and ice cream have a special connection. They treat it like a beautiful piece of art. They carefully lick it, enjoying every moment until the cone is completely finished. Their happy sigh at the end shows they have fully enjoyed the treat.

My kids had a meltdown yesterday after the older one pushed the younger one, causing her ice cream to spill. The result was a lot of screaming and tears.

So I decided to make something healthy yet satisfying for them. I had some giant can of pumpkin puree I got with good intentions but never used sitting in the pantry, some vanilla ice cream from the freezer, blended them together and a few minutes later, I had a Pumpkin Milkshake Ice cream drink.

I then handed them each a tall glass of the creamiest, dreamiest, most gorgeous orange milkshake they have ever seen.

The fighting stopped. The tears and complaining ended. For the first time all day, my house was actually quiet except for the sound of happy kids.

The best part? It takes less than five minutes to make, and I used ingredients I already have, and yet it somehow manages to taste like dessert while sneaking in actual nutrition.ย

A little bit of history

Pumpkin-Milkshake

While pumpkin pie is a centuries old tradition, the idea of pumpkin flavored drinks isn’t new either.ย

Colonial Americans made pumpkin ale and various pumpkin based beverages for centuries. But the creamy, ice cream based pumpkin milkshake we love today didn’t appear until the 1950s, when blenders became common in American homes and ice cream became widely available.

Today’s pumpkin milkshakes have evolved far beyond the basic vanilla ice cream and pumpkin puree combo. We’ve got versions with Greek yogurt for protein, coconut milk for vegans and others.

Health Benefits

This drink is actually packed with nutrients that make it way healthier than regular ice cream treats:

It’s full of Vitamin A, which is great for your vision, and is a wonderful source of fiber, which helps with digestion.

Unlike regular milkshakes, this one actually contains fiber from the pumpkin, which helps with digestion and keeps you feeling full longer.

It is also high in Potassium and the natural sugars provide quick energy, while the creamy texture and warm spices can actually boost mood and reduce stress.

There is a Lower Sugar Option, when made at home, you can control the sweetness level, making it much healthier than store bought alternatives.

Secrets for Milkshake Mastery

Secrets-for-Milkshake-Mastery

Pumpkin Puree vs. Pie Filling

Always use plain pumpkin puree, not the pre-spiced pie filling. You want to control the flavour.

Ice Cream Temperature

Slightly softened ice cream blends better and creates a creamier texture. Take it out 10-15 minutes before blending.

The Salt Secret

That tiny pinch of salt enhances all the other flavors and makes the sweetness pop. Don’t skip it.

Consistency Control

Start with less milk and add more as needed. It’s easier to thin out a thick milkshake than to thicken a thin one.

Don’t over blend

Once it’s smooth, stop. Over blending can make it watery and less creamy

Storage Magic

  • Immediate Storage: If you have leftovers (rare, but it happens), store in the fridge for up to 24 hours in an airtight container.
  • Freezer Method: Pour leftover milkshake into popsicle molds for homemade pumpkin ice pops! Kids love these.
  • Ice Cube Trick: Freeze leftover pumpkin puree in ice cube trays. Toss frozen cubes directly into the blender for instant thickness and flavor.
