Chocolate Freak Shake Recipe
Craving a chocolate milkshake, rich and loaded with toppings, here is my Chocolate Freak shake Recipe.
My daughter’s fourth birthday is on Saturday, and I asked her what she wanted since I wanted to give her a treat and do something crazy.ย
She screamed, โMum, I want a hot chocolate drink or a Red Velvet Hot Chocolateโ.
My original plan was to throw in some ice cream, milk, and chocolate syrup together. But then I decided to be creative. “What if I add brownies?” then “cookies! And some chocolate chips”
Three hours later, what was in front of me was a masterpiece, a chocolate skyscraper topped with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, crushed cookies, a full brownie, and even sprinkles. By the side of the cream is a whole slice of chocolate fudge cake.
When my kids saw it, they could not believe their eyes. My daughter shouted, โMum, this is unbelievable and amazing!โ
Forget everything you’ve heard about “everything in moderation.” This drink is so good, you won’t even care. Itโs so tasty, you’ll forget you’re on a diet.
The classic milkshake emerged in the 1920s when someone had the brilliant idea to combine ice cream, milk, and flavoring.
As the popularity grew, countries twisted and added their own twist to the recipe.
American versions went bigger and bolder, British variations added local sweets like cadbury bars, and Asian added unique flavors like matcha and black sesame.
So in this post, you will learn how to make this masterpiece called a Chocolate freak shake on your own.
Why Is It Called a ‘Freak’ Shake?

These shakes are made in such a way that when people see it, their first expression is “That’s crazy!” or “That’s freaky!”ย
The name captures that initial shock and reaction that happens when someone sees a shake topped with entire slices of cake, donuts, cookies, and candy.
How to make the Perfect Chocolate Freak Shake
Prep time 15 – 20 minutesย
Ingredients needed

- 1 cup chocolate milk
- ยฝ cup oat milk (any milk can be used )
- 2 scoops chocolate ice creamย
- 2 tbsp marshmallowย
- 1 tbsp dark chocolate chips
- 1/3 cup your favourite chocolate (I used dark chocolate)
- 2-3 squares blonde or salted caramel chocolate (for garnish)
- Chocolate sauce (optional)
Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Melt the Chocolate and spread on the inside and outside of the glass

- Melt your favourite chocolate (heat it gently on a stove or in a microwave) While still warm, spread chocolate on the inside and outside of the glass and drizzle the inside rim of your glass with it. This creates those beautiful drips down the sides.
Step 2: Blend the chocolate milk and oat milk

- In your blender mix ice cream, chocolate milk and oat milk and blend until smooth and creamy. It should be thick enough to support toppings but thin enough to drink through a straw.
Step 3: Pour in a glass

- Pour your shake into the glass gently, leaving about 2 inches at the top for your toppings.
Step 4: Decorate the glass

- This is where the magic happens. It’s time to decorate the glass (you can do this before pouring your shake, but I prefer to do it after so garnish wonโt get destroyed).
- Shred blonde or salted caramel chocolate into fine pieces and stick it into the edges, add some marshmallow and chocolate chips and have fun fit it.ย
Step 4: Garnish

- Top with a whipped cream and garnish with remaining marshmallows and dark chocolate chips or chocolate sauce. Serve cold with a straw. Enjoy.
Props and Styling
- Use colorful straws that complement your toppings
- Add some scattered ingredients around the base for context and beautiful pictures.
How Many Calories Are in a Chocolate Freak Shake?

A full chocolate freak shake can pack anywhere from 1,200 to 2,500 calories. That’s like eating 3 – 4 regular meals.ย
But here’s the thing, these aren’t meant to be everyday drinks. They’re special occasion treats and everyone enjoys it.
For instance, a birthday cake,ย you don’t eat the whole thing yourself, and you don’t have it every day. A typical freak shake can easily feed 2 – 3 people, which brings the calorie count down to around 400 – 800 per person.
How do you make a freak shake that won’t fall over?
- Use a wide glass to give your whipped cream a good base.
- Make sure your whipped cream is firm, like a foundation for a building.
- Place heavier toppings, like fruit slices, at the bottom so they don’t sink.
Here’s a bonus tip: chill or lightly freeze your toppings before adding them. They’ll hold their shape much better and keep your masterpiece from melting.
Can I make a healthier version?
Absolutely! Here are some simple swaps:
- Use frozen yogurt instead of ice cream (saves about 200 calories)
- Try almond/oat milk instead of whole milk
- Use sugar-free chocolate syrup
- Add fresh berries for natural sweetness and vitamins
- Use Greek yogurt mixed with cocoa powder for some of the whipped cream
