Even on a busy morning, you can still treat your family to something special. Try my Sourdough Cinnamon Sugar Toast recipe.

Mornings on school days can be full of stress and chaos as everyone rushes out the door. The list of things to do is endless: packing lunches, finishing last minute assignments, getting ready and finding shoes and uniforms.

Breakfast is often a quick bowl of cereal or bread with tea. But today, I wanted to whip up something different and special but won’t require any extra time.

So I found a loaf of sourdough bread that I bought for making French toast over the weekend then got some butter, cinnamon and sugar in the pantry.ย

And ten minutes later, the Sourdough Cinnamon Sugar Toast was ready served with Matcha green tea Frappuccino.

For the first time, everyone was sitting at the table already waiting for this amazing breakfast.ย  It was so simple and yet, it was the most satisfying breakfast weโ€™d had in a long time.

Sourdough Cinnamon Sugar Toast is a delicious treat made from four main ingredients:

  • Sourdough bread: This is the base of the toast.ย
  • Butter: The bread is generously coated with softened butter.
  • Sugar: Typically granulated or brown sugar is used.
  • Cinnamon: Ground cinnamon is mixed with the sugar to create the classic topping.
  • Maple syrup which is optional

Now, everyone in my home loves this recipe and it has become my go-to whenever I want to make a statement with my breakfast or impress someone.

I remember serving it to my mother-in-law when she visited and she was impressed that she didn’t know when she shouted and said, “Now this is how you start the day properly.”

A Delicious History

Sourdough bread is one of the oldest forms of bread, with its origins dating back to ancient Egypt.ย

Egyptian bakers discovered that wild yeasts could make bread rise naturally, which gave it a more complex flavor and made it easier to digest.

This method of making bread spread throughout the ancient world and was the standard way of doing it until the late 1800s, when commercial yeast became widely available.

The Health Benefits

While we’re all here for the indulgence, it’s fun to know there’s a little more to the story. Sourdough bread is known for a few key health benefits:

  • Good for Your Gut: The fermentation process of sourdough bread makes it easier for your body to digest.
  • Lower Glycemic Index: Sourdough has a lower glycemic index than many other types of bread. This means it wonโ€™t cause a sudden spike in your blood sugar.
  • Contains Beneficial Nutrients: Sourdough bread is a good source of fiber, protein, and B vitamins.
  • Antioxidant Advantage: Cinnamon is loaded with antioxidants, particularly polyphenols that fight inflammation and may help regulate blood sugar levels.

Pro Tips for Toast Perfection

Bread Selection Matters: Choose a high-quality artisan sourdough with good structure. Day old bread actually works better than fresh. It absorbs the butter without getting soggy.

Butter Temperature is Key: Softened butter spreads easily without tearing the bread, but it shouldn’t be melted. Leave it out for 30-60 minutes or soften briefly in the microwave.

Cinnamon Quality Counts: Ceylon cinnamon is sweeter and more complex than cassia cinnamon. It’s worth seeking out at specialty stores or online.

The Salt Secret: That pinch of salt isn’t optional but it enhances the sweetness and adds depth to the flavor profile.

Edge-to-Edge Coverage: Butter and sugar mixture should go all the way to the crusts. Bare spots equal disappointment.

Thickness Matters: Slices that are too thin will burn; too thick won’t toast properly. Aim for 3/4 inch thickness.

Make sure the bread does not burn: The line between perfect golden toast and burnt disappointment is about 30 seconds.ย

Storage Tips

Honestly, this toast is best eaten immediately. But if you must store leftovers, let them cool completely and store in an airtight container for up to 24 hours.

Then Pop leftover toast back in the toaster for 30-60 seconds to restore some crispness.

Your cinnamon sugar blend can be mixed in advance and stored in an airtight container for up to 6 months. Perfect for busy mornings.

Frequently Asked Questionsย

Can I use regular bread instead of sourdough?ย

You absolutely can, but you’ll miss out on that incredible tangy flavor that makes this toast special. If you must substitute, choose a hearty artisan bread with good structure.

My toast keeps burning before the inside is warm. What’s wrong?ย

Lower your heat and toast for longer. High heat browns the outside too quickly. Also, make sure your slices aren’t too thick.
