How To Hide Ugly Kitchen Appliances

I wonder if there is any home equipment that looks outdated as quickly as kitchen appliances. Refrigerators, bulky blenders, microwaves, and air fryers are expensive investments. You can’t just replace a perfectly functioning one because it looks old. If you’ve been looing for how to hide ugly kitchen appliances, this guide is for you.

Even when the kitchen is deep cleaned, unattractive appliances on countertops can still make the space look cluttered and unkempt. One of the best ways to elevate your space is to declutter and hide ugly kitchen appliances in a smart, stylish way.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through practical, budget-friendly ways to hide ugly kitchen appliances, clear your counters, and create a kitchen that feels calm, stylish, and intentional without a full renovation.

How To Hide Ugly Kitchen Appliances

1. Declutter First: Decide What Really Deserves Counter Space

Start by decluttering your kitchen appliances. Take a moment to identify what you use daily, like the kettle, coffee maker, or toaster. Then separate the ones you only use occasionally, such as the food processor or stand mixer.

Before and after pf a decluttered kitchen

Not every appliance deserves a permanent spot on your countertop. Group them into two categories: everyday use and occasional use.

Keep daily essentials in one designated area so they remain accessible and organized. Store the rest in cabinets, pantry shelves, or deep drawers. This simple step helps hide ugly kitchen appliances while making your kitchen easier to clean and maintain.

2. Use Appliance Garages

An appliance garage is a specialized cabinet designed to store countertop appliances like air fryers, blenders, and toasters. It often features folding doors, lift-up panels, or tambour doors, similar to a real garage.

This solution keeps appliances accessible but out of sight, helping you hide ugly kitchen appliances while maintaining a clean look.

You can adapt an appliance garage to any kitchen size. Smaller kitchens can use compact versions beside cabinets or countertops. Larger kitchens can include layered cabinets that hold multiple appliances and essentials.

DIY appliance garage ideas

  • Keep it next to the fridge or close to your food prep area. This is to easily access your appliances while cooking.
  • Install adjustable shelves in tall appliance garage. This will allow you to customize the space depending on appliance heights and needs.
  • Choose doors that meets your aesthetic preference and kitchen layout,. Tambour or roll-up doors are most popular because they are great for tight spaces.
  • Pullout tray:  I usually recommend opting for appliance garage that has slides or pull-out tray. You can easily pull out your toaster so you don’t have to lift it. Then, set it on a counter on the other side of the kitchen on busy mornings.

3. How to hide an ugly fridge:

The refrigerator is one of the most used kitchen appliances and also the fastest to look old. Here are simple, creative DIY ways to conceal it without completely moving it away while still maintaining it’s functionality.

  • Wrap it: If your fridge looks old, the best way to conceal the ugliness is to wrap it up with a stylish vinyl or wallpaper. You can choose from matte, gloss, textured, or patterned finishes like stainless steel or wooden finishes.
  • To install a vinyl, clean the surface of the fridge to remove residue of dirt and oils, then remove the handles and apply the vinyl from top to bottom, making sure to press it when applying to achieve a smooth and neat look.
  • Change your refrigerator handle: The handle is one of the parts that makes the fridge look out of style, and changing the handle can bring back the spark. Choose a handle colour that is similar to your kitchen cabinet handle.
  • Turn it into a whole chalkboard: Another stylish way to hide a not-so-good-looking fridge is to cover it with chalkboard adhesive. Place a plant on the top and dress it up with the letter your son wrote to you on your birthday. Now, you won’t have to look at an ugly fridge, but a reminder of how much your son loves you.
  • Display photo albums or a favourite magazine on the body of the fridge.

4. Hide Appliances with Cabinet Curtains or Sliding Doors:

One of the easiest ways to hide kitchen appliances with curtains or sliding panels is to simply cover them in a way that still feels stylish and intentional.

Just install a small tension rod inside an open cabinet or under a shelf and hang a fabric that matches your kitchen aesthetics.

There are several renter-friendly curtains to choose from like linen, cotton, or even patterned fabric conceal that old, built-in model microwave oven or you can opt for DIY wooden sliders.

5. Create a Dedicated Appliance Cabinet:

You can dedicate a cabinet for a particular small appliance that you don’t use daily, like mixers, food processor and air fryers.

Create a Dedicated Appliance Cabinet

Make use of every space in your kitchen that can hide your appliances, that empty space in your pantry, it could turn into a coffee station; place a coffee maker, a kettle, and other coffee essentials to make it your cute little beverage zone.

Or turn your pantry into a food prep zone by placing your blender and food processor.

Pro tip: Store lighter appliances like a kettle on the upper shelves and heavy appliances like a stand mixer on the lower shelves for safety. Ensure to use pantry with adjustable shelves that can accommodate varying heights like tall blenders can fit into deeper sections, while toasters can fit into shallower sections.

6. Use Rolling Carts for Flexible Storage:

I’ve realized that even the biggest kitchens don’t always have enough hidden storage. No matter how spacious it may look, there’s always something that doesn’t quite fit into the cabinets or drawers.

Use a rolling cart

That’s why I’m such a fan of a stylish rolling cart kitchen storage. It’s honestly such a huge lifesaver for all those extras that constantly occupy the countertop. It’s even better if you can tuck it neatly beside the fridge. It’s such a smart way to use that awkward little space instead of letting it go to waste.

7. Use side panels:

If the side of your refrigerator or dishwasher is exposed, covering it with a DIY finish-grade plywood colour that matches your cabinets just makes everything blend so beautifully and makes it feel calm and put together.

8. Use a lazy Susan:

A lazy Susan is a circular tray that rotates, like a turntable, usually made of wood, plastic, or even glass. Hiding your stand mixer on a lazy Susan and sliding it into a deep drawer might sound a little extra, but it’s honestly genius if you don’t use it every single day.

Use a lazy susan

With a lazy Susan, all you do is simply spin, grab, and use your appliance without awkwardly trying to reach the back of your shelf and dragging or scratching your cabinets.

9. Stylish Baskets and Decorative Boxes:

I also love using a decorative tray to group smaller items together. It’s such a simple trick, but it makes the space look curated, not cluttered. If you have small appliances like short electric kettles, toasters, coffee grinders, and small food processors sitting out, try tucking them into a woven basket; it instantly tones down that busy look.

While occasionally used items like waffle makers, sandwich press, mini air fryer, stand mixer attachments & accessories, and slow cooker inserts or lids can perfectly be concealed in storage bins to make everything coordinated, even open shelving feels styled instead of messy.

10. Use fabric covers to hide the dishwasher:

Use fabrics to cover the dish washer

Just measure the front of your dishwasher so the fabric fits neatly, without dragging on the floor. Then choose a fabric that complements your kitchen, something durable like cotton, linen or a patterned fabric to add a touch of personality.

Final thought

Lastly, don’t hide your ugly kitchen appliances as if they don’t exist because you’ll still need them at some point but make it in such a way that your kitchen feels calm, intentional, and loveable.

You don’t need a full renovation to make your kitchen beautiful. Sometimes, it’s just about being a little creative and thoughtful with what you already have.
