10 Minimalist Kitchen Essentials You’ll Actually Use

On my wedding day, I was given a lot of gift items from friends, coupled with the truck load of kitchen wares my mom gifted me. They were so much that everything couldn’t fit into my medium sized kitchen space. Some had to be kept outside for about a month before I could figure out what to do with them. And honestly, it was overwhelming.

Being a minimalist kind of person who doesn’t like a clustered space, I had to spend time and select kitchen essentials that I truly needed. I gave out the ones I knew I will never use, like fondue Sets, banana slicer, vegetable chopper, egg separator etc.

Don’t get me wrong, they were beautiful and incredibly thoughtful gifts. But I kept asking myself one simple question: “what’s the point of owning something that will only sit there and take up space?”

That experience was what truly introduced me to the idea of minimalist kitchen essentials. It isn’t about owning less for the sake of it. It’s about choosing tools that are practical, versatile, reliable and used often. When I removed the excesses, cooking became faster, cleanup was simpler, and the entire experience felt and still feels calmer and more intentional.

In this guide, I’ll show you the 10 minimalist kitchen essentials you’ll actually use. Whether you’re setting up your first kitchen, decluttering what you already own, or simply trying to make cooking feel easier again. Trust me, this kitchen essentials are all that you’ll need for your day-to-day cooking.

What Makes a Kitchen Item ‘Minimalist’?

A minimalist kitchen is all about simplicity, functionality and clarity. Here are a few simple criteria that I used in choosing my minimalist kitchen essentials;

  • Multi-purpose: Any kitchen item that can’t save two or more purpose might just be occupying your space. Take a look at this. A good chef knife serves me better than those banana slicer, pineapple cutter, etc that I gave out.
  • Durable: Tools that would break, rust, or wear out after a few months isn’t fit to have a place in your kitchen. For me, I prioritized quality over quantity. I still do, so they can last for years instead of needing constant replacement.
  • Easy to clean: This may sound funny but it isn’t laziness, especially if you are a busy person. Come to think of it, who loves things that are difficult, annoying and takes time to wash? Personally, I always avoid such items and will always go for simple designs. Those that rinse quickly or go straight into the dishwasher to make my everyday cooking much smoother.
  • Space-saving: This is very important, if you own a medium-sized kitchen like me. My bestie gifted me a rice cooker which cooks nothing else but rice, I still feel bad that I had to give it out because a simple medium sized sauce pan perfectly cooks rice, pasta and even soups. I needed space, yes.
  • Frequently used: I had to ask myself a very honest question “will I use this every week?” If the answer was no, it probably didn’t belong in my kitchen.

Once I started using these criteria, it became much easier to identify what truly counted as a minimalist kitchen essential. And surprisingly, I needed far less kitchen items than I originally thought.

Each of these items that I am about to list out has earned its place in my kitchen by being practical, dependable, and part of my daily routine, keeping my space simple without clustering.

1. The Chef’s Knife

If there’s one tool, I would keep in my kitchen no matter what, it would be a good chef’s knife. It easily replaces so many other tools people think they need.

Instead of owning separate slicers, choppers and specialty knives, one well-made chef’s knife can handle almost everything. From chopping veggies, mincing herbs, crushing garlic, cutting fruit and to even slicing meats.

Now, you understand why I gave out the pineapple slicer and apple cutter, right?

The one I have in my kitchen was given to me by my mom and I’ve used it for 3 years now. It’s not too heavy or too light, it’s balanced, feels comfortable and easy to control when I hold it.

Over the years, I’ve used my granddad’s native hand-held iron sharpener to sharpen my chef’s knife whenever it feels dull. If you don’t have an iron sharpener, you can always sharpen your knife in the local market or buy one.

2. Cutting Board

A cutting board is the next kitchen essential that you’ll actually use. It goes hand in hand with the chef’s knife. Personally, I always keep two cutting boards; one for vegetables and the other strictly for raw meat. It’s my small habit that saves a lot of hassle and keeps things hygienic.

Wooden cutting boards

You can choose between a wooden or plastic cutting board. Wooden boards are knife-friendly, durable and mine even doubles as a serving tray. Plastic boards are lightweight, safe for your dishwasher. They’re perfect for raw meat or fish since you can disinfect them easily.

Always go for medium sized cutting boards that are not too heavy so your kids can carry them as well.

3. Nonstick or Stainless-Steel Pan

I have a nonstick pan in my kitchen, it serves me all round from frying eggs in the morning for breakfast to sauteing vegetables, reheating leftover food at night or whipping up a quick one-pan meal.

Instead of buying a different pan for every little task, one versatile pan lets you cook efficiently and consistently.

Nonstick pans are perfect for quick meals and delicate foods like eggs or fish. They require less oil and clean up almost instantly and perfect for anyone who hates scrubbing.

While, Stainless steel pans are more durable and versatile. They can handle higher heat. All you need to do is develop a natural nonstick surface with proper seasoning, and can it last for years if you invest in a good one.

4. Crock of Cooking Utensils

I grew up in an African home, my mom used to keep plates, spoons, forks, wooden spatulas inside a medium sized plastic basket and it will take minutes to find an item.

Crock of cooking utensils

I didn’t know about a dedicated crock of cooking utensils till I saw it in my friend’s kitchen, it held all her everyday cooking tools; wooden spoons, spatulas, tongs, ladles and whisks. It was so beautiful and neat.

Imagine having all your essential tools in one place. No more digging through drawers or baskets, searching for that one wooden spoon or spatula that somehow disappeared right when you needed it.

A crock keeps your most-used kitchen utensils organized, visible, and within reach. I quickly got one and kept it on the countertop, next to my gas cooker.

5. Mixing Bowls

If there’s one kitchen item I underestimated when I first set up my minimalist kitchen, it was mixing bowls. I used to think they were just for baking or making salad, but honestly, I reach for them almost every day now.

Mixing bowls

From tossing a quick salad to marinating meat, mixing ingredients, or even quicky serving snacks when my friends stop by. I have a set of 3 glass mixing bowls and I love them.

6. Measuring cups and spoons

They are small things that make a difference, you may think they are for bakers till you decide to start making snacks at home for your weekend family time. I use my glass measuring cups for melting butter, mixing small batches and they are also microwave safe. While my plastic measuring cups and spoons are used strictly for measuring.

7. Silicone Spatula or Wooden Spoon

Instead of cluttering drawers with different stirrers, scrapers, and turners, one or two well-chosen tools can do most of the work.

I have both a silicone spatula and wooden spoon, neatly stored in my crock of kitchen utensils.  Can you see how these kitchen essentials are inter-related?

Silicone spatula and wooden spoon are my everyday companion, whether I’m stirring a pot of soup, stirring vegetables, or scraping the last bit of chi-chin batter from a bowl, one of these is always in my hand.

Many people love wooden spoons because they feel traditional and are heat resistant. You can choose the one that best suits you.

8. Storage Containers

I have storage containers of different sizes and shapes. All of them are transparent glass jars, to keep food visible so nothing gets forgotten and wasted.

Each has its purpose; for chopped ingredients, storing leftover from dinner, storing fruits and for meal prep. It helps my fridge or pantry look less chaotic.

9. Sheet Pan / Baking Tray

I have an Aluminium heavy-duty sheet pan that doesn’t warp under high heat. I use my sheet pan everyday, not just for baking but also for cooking; roasting vegetables for quick meals, baking chicken, fish, or potatoes, toasting bread or warming pastries and reheating leftovers.

If you ever want a quick evenly re-heating of left-overs, use a sheet pan and thank me later, that’s my little secret, don’t say I didn’t do something for you today.

10. Strainer

Initially, I overlooked the importance of a stainer until I mistakenly poured pasta when trying to drain with a pot lid and it was really messy.

Strainers used in the kitchen

Now, my strainer has served me, from rinsing rice to washing fresh fruits and vegetables, straining liquids from cooked foods and even air-drying produce before storage.

It makes the whole process of food prep faster, cleaner and less stressful for me.

Final thoughts

To make your kitchen look simple, cluster-free, and organized all you need are kitchen essentials that you’ll use regularly and multiple purpose, not dozens of gadgets that takes up space. If you’ve not used a particular item in 6 months, then it doesn’t belong to your minimalist kitchen but occupying space.
